Cesare Nebbia, The Coronation of the Virgin

1350-90
Mosaic
West façade, Orvieto Cathedral

This mosaic of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary tops the center of the cathedral's façade. Below are a rose window and a similarly triangular mosaic. It follows a pattern that developed in the latter part of the 13th century, in which Christ is pictured placing the crown on Mary's head, the two sharing a single wide throne. Attending angels are, unsurprisingly, a regular feature in this iconographic type.
